Digitruck - Why an alternative learning environment could change the way rural children get an education in Zambia
Learning in rural Zambia has always been a challenge. Overcrowded classrooms (sometimes having up to 80 children), lack of resources, and children forced to walk hours a day to a school. On top of that, as universities and schools begin to rely more heavily on online learning, children in disadvantaged areas such as South Luangwa are increasingly left behind. This is where Digitruck- a mobile computer classroom comes in. In partnership with Close the Gap, Digitruck utilises digital tablets to teach children creatively. Instead of traditional chalk boards, Digitruck provides the flexibility for children to learn in or outside the classroom, to hook up to projector screens for large class learning, or to individually work through tasks using their own tablet.
In January 2022, Project Luangwa launched our first Digitruck pilot scheme. Working with Mwabu’s interactive learning platform, we selected one whole grade at Chiwawatala Primary School, to trial the program.
By monitoring progress throughout the program, our Digitruck project will allow us to:
• Understand the biggest challenges students face and target these areas for greater support
• Provide creative solutions to improve understanding of tricky subjects
•Insure an overall improved learner experience by allowing students more freedom and access to more exciting content.
The current cost is about $65,000 to get this project up and running, including construction costs, solar panels, projectors, tablets and more. Africa Hope Fund match up to the first $10,000 donated. Be a part of an important movement to help educate children in rural Africa who face so many challenges in receiving a quality education. We thank you for your support!
